Bangladesh’s interim government is led by economist Mohammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave her position three days ago and take refuge in India, a neighboring country.

84-year-old Yunus took oath at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Dhaka on Thursday night. Political leaders, civil society leaders, generals and diplomats attended the ceremony.

After being sworn in by President Mohammad Shahabuddin, Yunus said, “I will protect, support and defend the Constitution.” He said he would perform his duties “honestly”.

More than a dozen members of his cabinet were also sworn in. Their positions are advisors, not ministers, they also took oath. Now the caretaker government will restore peace and prepare for new elections.

These include Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmood. These are top leaders of the student anti-discrimination group. These groups had protested for several weeks to remove Hasina from power.

Others include former foreign secretary Tauhid Hossain and former attorney general Hasan Ariff. Award-winning environmental lawyer Sayeeda Rizwana Hasan and top law professor and author Asif Nazrul also took oath.
