The rescue operation is underway and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has taken stock of the situation. “Some military installations in the valley have been affected and efforts are on to confirm the details,” a statement from the Defense PRO, Guwahati, said. On Wednesday, PM Modi assured ‘all possible assistance’ to the CM amid the disaster.

The flash flood is believed to have started around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said. Meanwhile, according to Central Water Commission data, the water level of Teesta river was below the danger mark at 1 pm on Wednesday and there is no flood situation in its vicinity. According to the CWC, the water level at three stations on Teesta – Melli, Singtam and Rohtak – is below the danger mark but hovering close to it.

In the meanwhile, according to a circular from the education department, all schools in the districts of Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong, and Namchi would be shuttered through October 8. The water level downstream unexpectedly increased to a height of 15-20 feet due to the release of water from the Chungthang Dam.
