PM Modi says Austria and India are “prepared to provide assistance to restore peace” in Ukraine.

PM Modi arrived in Vienna late Tuesday night after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where he urged “peace through dialogue” and said “war cannot solve problems”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Vienna on Wednesday after the Kremlin said India is ready to provide all possible assistance to restore peace in war-torn Ukraine.

PM Modi arrived in Vienna late Tuesday night after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where he urged “peace through dialogue” and said “war cannot solve problems”.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised a photo of Prime Minister Modi hugging Putin during the visit, saying it was a “devastating blow to peace”.

PM Modi’s visit to Russia comes at a time when tensions have escalated in Europe following a deadly Russian missile attack in Ukraine, which Kiev said hit a children’s hospital in the capital.

“This is not the era of war. “On the battlefield, problems cannot be solved,” PM Modi and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer told reporters in Vienna. In order to ensure the “quick restoration of peace and stability,” PM Modi stated that Austria and India “stand ready to provide all possible assistance.” On Ukraine, Nehammer said the two countries have a “common goal” of achieving “comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter”, underlining India’s important role as the world’s largest democracy.
