No OTP from December 1?New rules will apply to BSNL, Vi, Airtel, and Jio.

TRAI has directed telecom companies to implement traceability to track OTP-based messages, which can be implemented from December 1.

With the growing trend of internet and smartphones, along with the facilities of these technologies, many types of threats have also emerged. While smartphones have made many tasks easier, it has also provided scammers and cybercriminals with new ways to cheat people. In view of this, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently implemented several measures to protect people from fraud and online fraud.

TRAI has taken an important step, directing telecom companies to implement message traceability. This major decision was first announced in August, focusing on commercial messages and OTP (one-time passwords). Initially, telcos were given an October 31 deadline to implement these traceability measures, but this deadline was extended to November 31 following requests from major companies like Jio, Airtel, VI, and BSNL. As the new deadline approaches, these companies will have to comply with TRAI’s rules for tracking commercial and OTP messages.

It is important to note that if Jio , Airtel, VI, and BSNL start implementing these traceability measures from December 1, OTP messages may be delayed. As a result, if you are engaged in activities like banking or booking reservations, you may have to wait longer for your OTP.

TRAI’s initiative stems from the realization that scammers often exploit fake OTP messages to gain access to individuals’ devices, resulting in significant financial losses. By implementing this rule across all telcos , TRAI aims to protect consumers more effectively.
