Russia claims to make gains in eastern Ukraine and take control of town

Russia said on Sunday that its forces had taken full control of a town in eastern Ukraine, while Moscow’s forces were advancing on the strategically important town of Pokrovsk and trying to penetrate the Ukrainian defensive front.

In an attempt to seize the entirety of Donbass, which is roughly half the size of the US state of Ohio, the Russian army is making advances in eastern Ukraine.Since entering the country in February 2022, the Russian army has taken control of about a fifth of Ukraine.

The town of Novohrodivka, which is 12 km (7 miles) from Pokrovsk, a vital rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area, has been taken over by Russian forces, according to the ministry of defense of Russia. Before the war, there were 14,000 people living in the town.

Yuri Podolyaka, an influential, pro-Russian military blogger of Ukrainian origin, published maps showing Russian forces attacking at least two positions beyond Novohrodivka, less than 7 km (4 miles) from Pokrovsk.

The Ukrainian army’s general staff detailed fighting in the Pokrovsk sector, including Novohrodivka, in a report released Sunday evening.

It said 29 Russian advance attempts had been repelled, while seven clashes continued. “Our troops are taking measures to maintain the set positions,” it added.

However, a U.S.-funded Radio Liberty interview with a Ukrainian official last week claimed that Ukrainian forces had left Novohrodivka because the area was unsuitable for the city’s defense.

Explained: Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate rules

Explained: Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate rules

US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first debate on Tuesday, with both trying to gain an edge in the fiercely contested race for the White House. After weeks of back-and-forth over where, when and how the debate will take place, US broadcaster ABC — which is hosting the event — this week announced the final rules for the contest, which have been agreed upon by both campaigns.

Here are the key highlights.

When and where to watch the Trump vs Harris debate
The debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday at 9:00 pm local time (0100 GMT on Wednesday) and will be broadcast live. There will be no audience in the room.

The event will be moderated by ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis and will run for 90 minutes, with two ad breaks.

Mikes muted at Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate?

The issue of whether microphones would be muted – as was done during the previous debate between US President Joe Biden and Trump – was controversial, with each side accusing the other of cowardice over the question.

ABC has announced that each candidate’s microphone will only be on when it’s their turn to speak, and muted when it’s the other candidate’s turn.

Only the moderator will be able to ask questions, and no topics or questions will be shared with the candidates beforehand.

Who will speak when?

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will not make opening statements. They will be allotted two minutes to answer each question, while their opponent will be given two minutes for a rebuttal.

There will be an additional minute for “follow-up, clarification or response,” according to the rules.

At the end of the debate, each candidate will make a two-minute closing statement, with Trump speaking last according to the results of a virtual coin toss.

No Props
Candidates will stand behind the podium throughout the debate; no props or pre-written notes will be allowed.

Telegram chief Durov calls France’s charges “astonishing” and “misleading”

Telegram founder and chief executive Pavel Durov on Thursday hit out at France for arresting and charging him last month for publishing extremist and illegal content on the popular messaging app.

In a lengthy post on Telegram, his first comments since his arrest, Durov said it was “astonishing” that he was being held responsible for other people’s content.

“Accusing a CEO of crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages using laws that predate smartphones is a misguided approach,” the CEO declared.

He also criticised claims that “Telegram is some kind of anarchic paradise” and said “we remove millions of harmful posts and channels every day.”

He denied France’s allegations that Paris had not received a response from Telegram to its requests, saying he had personally helped French authorities “set up a hotline with Telegram to deal with the threat of terrorism in France.”

But striking a more conciliatory tone at the end of his message, Durov said Telegram’sHe claimed that the platform’s 950 million users worldwide were experiencing “growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform.” “I made it my personal goal to ensure that we significantly improve things in this regard,” he stated, indicating that more information would be shared later and that it was being worked on “internally.”

“I hope that Telegram — and the social networking industry as a whole — will become safer and stronger as a result of the events in August.” He added that “we are ready to leave that country” when Telegram cannot agree with local regulators on “the right balance betweenHe has received support from fellow tech tycoon and X chief executive, Elon Musk, who has posted comments under the hashtag #FreePavel. Durov was arrested on August 24 after arriving on a private jet at Le Bourget airport outside Paris and was questioned by investigators in the following days.

He was granted conditional release on bail of five million euros ($5.5 million) and on the condition that he must report to a police station twice a week as well as remain in France.

A mysterious figure who rarely speaks in public, Durov is a citizen of Russia, France and the United Arab Emirates, where Telegram is based.

“When we were dragged on the streets…”: Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia join Congress

Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who shook the political scene in Haryana just weeks ahead of the assembly elections in the state, have joined the Congress.

The two Olympians, who were at the forefront of protests against alleged sexual harassment and threats by former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year, had met senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday.

On Friday, Ms Phogat and Mr Punia, who are both 30, met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence before formally joining the party at the party headquarters in New Delhi.

“Chak de India, Chak de Haryana! Met our talented champions Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia at 10 Rajaji Marg, who have made India proud in the world. We are proud of you both,” Mr Kharge posted in Hindi on Twitter.

Chak de India, Chak de Haryana!

Met our talented champions Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia at 10 Rajaji Marg, who have made India proud in the world.

Speaking at the event organised at the Congress office, Ms Phogat said it is only when times are bad that people realise who really stands with them.
“I hope I live up to the expectations of the people of this country, who have supported me throughout my wrestling career. Thank you.”

I want to thank the Congress because, as they say, when times are bad, only then one realises who stands with them. When we were dragged on the streets, every party except the BJP stood with us and understood our pain and our tears,” she said in Hindi.
“I take pride in belonging to a party that opposes mistreatment and unfair treatment of women. I wish to reassure the nation’s citizens
that we will work for them with the same intensity with which we have worked in wrestling. We support all women who are left powerless. I could have given up wrestling at Jantar Mantar (during the protest) if I had wanted to, but I made it to the Olympic final. But God had other plans.

He has now given me an opportunity to serve the people of my country,” she said. Mr Punia said the Congress supported the wrestlers without asking them, while BJP MPs ignored letters seeking their support. “We are paying the price for raising our voice in support of the daughters of the country… We will continue to work for the people of the country and strengthen the Congress party as well as India,” he said.

Everyone was happy when Vinesh Phogat reached the final, but some people also celebrated when she was disqualified. Though no official announcement has been made yet, Ms Phogat is expected to contest the Haryana Assembly elections from the Julana constituency on a Jannayak Janata Party ticket, while Mr Punia may be fielded from the Badli seat.

Resignation from Railways

Ms. Phogat resigned from her position as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Northern Railways, citing personal reasons, just hours before she joined the Congress.

The wrestler wrote on Twitter, sharing a photo of her letter of resignation, saying, “Working for Indian Railways has been an amazing and fulfilling experience for me.
At this juncture of my life, I have decided to disassociate myself from my service in Railways and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of Indian Railways. I will always be grateful to the Indian Railways family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in serving the nation.

Ms Phogat’s popularity shot up further recently when she was disqualified for being 100 grams over the weight limit before the final bout in the 50kg freestyle wrestling event and missed out on at least a silver medal. The courage shown by the wrestler in defeating reigning gold medallist Yui Susaki of Japan and entering the finals earned her praise, while her eventual disqualification broke crores of hearts.

Supporting farmers

Ms Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling after being disqualified and all eyes were on her next steps. Last week, she was seen in a rally at the Haryana-Punjab Shambhu border. and extended her support to the farmers protesting for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops and said she stands with them as their daughter.

“Today your movement has completed 200 days. I pray to God that you get what you have come here for – your rights, justice…your daughter stands with you. I also urge the government…we are also citizens of this country, if we raise our voice it is not political every time…you should listen to them…what they are demanding is not illegal,” she had said.

No yogi or saint can ever be a slave to authority: Adityanath Yogi

The Chief Minister, while highlighting the legacy of Baba Keenaram, said that his stories are full of miracles. “No saint or yogi can ever be a slave of power. Instead, they inspire the society to follow in their footsteps. This is what Baba Keenaram achieved through divine sadhna after his birth 425 years ago,” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said during the 425th Avtaran Samaroh at Baba Keenaram Math, the site of Baba Keenaram’s birth on Sunday in Ramgarh, Chandauli.

He explained how Baba Keenaram did many works for the welfare of the society and rebuked and banished the then ruler Shah Jahan.

“The result of Baba Keenaram’s divine sadhna is evident today. The Kriin Kund established in Kashi is a proof of unifying all the sadhna practices of India,” Yogi Adityanath said.

The Chief Minister further stressed that India became a slave because foreign invaders succeeded in dividing the society. He said that saints connect the entire society and inspire them to follow their path. The achievements and sadhana of saints and sanyasis always lie in national interest, social interest and human welfare. Paying homage to Baba Keenaram, the CM said that my program was in Sonbhadra, but by his grace I got the privilege of coming here. Baba Keenaram was a divine personality from birth, born in a prosperous family. He attained siddhis through sadhana, but Baba used his spiritual achievements for the welfare of the nation and the people. On one hand, He attempted to build bridges between Dalits, tribal people, and other societal groups. He reawakened the spirit of a society devoid of discrimination, which could only have been accomplished by a saint, Aghoracharya, or Yogi.

‘Melania hates Donald Trump, wants Kamala Harris to win’: Trump ally Scaramucci makes shocking claim

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said that Donald Trump’s wife Melania is secretly hoping that US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris wins the November election.

Speaking to Ben Meiselas, who hosts a podcast for digital news outlet MeidasTouch, Scaramucci claimed, “She hates Donald Trump.”

“Maybe Melania Trump. She might be the only person I think of,” Scaramucci said while responding to a question on who would want to see Kamala Harris in the White House.

He added, “My wife hates Trump as much as Melania does,” before telling his host Ben that he would get along better with Trump than Melania.

The former First Lady has been notably absent from several major events, including the election launch in Iowa and Trump’s Super Tuesday celebrations.

Super Tuesday is the day when several US states hold primary elections to choose their preferred presidential candidates. When asked about her involvement in the political campaign, she simply said, “Stay tuned”.She did not attend the first US presidential debate held in Atlanta either. Donald Trump referred to his wife as a “private person” in September 2023.

“She is a private person, a great person, a very confident person, and she loves our country very much,” the former US president said at the time during an interview with Meet the Press. “When the time is right, she will be there,” Trump had said. In July, Melania Trump attended the Republican National Convention and received a rousing ovation when she took to the stage in Milwaukee wearing a bright red skirt suit by Christian Dior.

Bengaluru: First Vande Bharat prototype sleeper train unveiled in India, see details

India has welcomed the first prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper coach! At BEML’s Bengaluru headquarters, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the model.

According to details shared by PTI, the newly introduced coach will be tested for about 10 days. After this, it will be taken on the track for further testing. After getting satisfactory results, the train is expected to be operational for the general public in the next three months.

The report states that the Vande Bharat sleeper is much better than the Rajdhani Express and other models. It will allow passengers to travel long distances in complete comfort.

The sleeper variant will have a better average speed than the Rajdhani Express, all due to faster acceleration and deceleration. Once operational, the train is likely to run at an average speed of 160 kmph, while the test speed will be 180 kmph.
