Emphasizing the need for accountability and prompt action in response to derogatory comments made by senior officials against Indian PM Modi, Maldives Member of Parliament Mikael Naseem has called on the Parliament to call out the Foreign Minister for inaction and lack of urgency . A massive uproar broke out after a Maldives deputy minister as well as other cabinet members and government officials made derogatory and indecent references to PM Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep.

On January 2, PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and shared several photos, including an ‘exciting experience’ of trying his hand at snorkelling. In a series of posts on Instagram, PM Modi shared photos of white beaches, pristine blue skies and oceans and tagged them with a message that read, “For those who want to embrace the adventurous in them, Lakshadweep Should be on your list.”

Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment Shiuna made a sarcastic and disparaging reference to Prime Minister Modi during his visit to the Indian archipelago in a post that has since been removed.

He also shared photos from PM Modi’s trip to Lakshadweep in his post.

On Sunday, former Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took to social media to condemn the use of ‘hateful language’ against India by government officials, saying New Delhi has always been a good friend of the island nation.

“I condemn the use of hate language against India by Maldives government officials on social media,” Solih posted on his official handle on social media platform X.
