Afghanistan Embassy has closed its operations in India

Earlier this year, the Afghanistan embassy was rocked by a power struggle after the Taliban appointed a chargĂ© d’affaires to lead the mission.

New Delhi: Afghanistan Embassy in India today suspended operations citing inability to serve the interests of the country and lack of staff and resources. India will take over control of the embassy in a caretaker capacity, the embassy statement said. The announcement comes two years after the Taliban overthrew the elected government in Afghanistan.
While India does not recognize the Taliban government, it had allowed the Afghan embassy to continue operations under the ambassador and mission staff appointed by former President Ashraf Ghani, who fled Kabul in 2021.

The embassy experienced a power struggle earlier this year as a result of rumors that the Taliban had named a charge d’affaires to take over Mamundze’s position as mission leader. After the incident, the embassy released a statement claiming that its leadership had not changed.
The power struggle started when Qadir Shah, who had been serving as a trade councilor at the embassy since 2020, claimed in a letter to the Foreign Ministry in late April that the Taliban had taken over his position as charge d’affaires. was installed.
But the embassy closure statement said it “categorically rejects any baseless claims regarding internal discord” among embassy staff, and denied that any diplomats ” Was using the crisis to seek refuge in the country”.

The Afghanistan Embassy criticized the Indian government of being unsupportive in their statement. It said that this made it more difficult for him to efficiently perform his job.
