NIFTY50 closes below 25,000 mark, selling pressure on midcap and smallcap indices

On Wednesday, frontline benchmark indices Sensex and NIFTY50 ended the day on a negative note, both falling -0.49%. Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty PSU Bank were among the top sectoral losers today.Significant selling pressure was also seen in the larger market, as evidenced by the declines of -0.17% and -0.81% in the midcap and smallcap indices, respectively.

Tatas Motors and ONGC stocks were among the top losers in the NIFTY50 index. Tata Motors declined as brokerages continued to issue sell calls and ONGC also declined as crude oil prices fell sharply. Yesterday, crude oil prices fell sharply as OPEC cut its forecast for global oil demand and lowered its expectations.

US inflation data, to be released after the close of Indian markets on Wednesday, is expected to push inflation closer to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. This development could prompt the central bank to consider a rate cut of 25 basis points at its meeting next week.

In the NIFTY50 sector, 16 stocks rose and 34 declined. Bajaj Auto (+4.03%), Asian Paints (+2.23%), Bajaj Finance (+1.65%), Shriram Finance (+0.86%), and Britannia (+0.80%) were the top gainers. Laggards included Tata Motors (-5.73%), ONGC (-2.94%), Wipro (-1.85%), L&T (-1.56%), and Adani Enterprise (-1.55%).

‘Putin will eat you for lunch’: On Ukraine war, Kamala Harris responds to Trump’s ‘bad negotiator’ accusation

‘Putin will eat you for lunch’: On Ukraine war, Kamala Harris responds to Trump’s ‘bad negotiator’ accusation

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump on Tuesday (US local time) battled to influence the 2024 presidential election on the biggest stage in American politics. The event was held in Philadelphia.

When Trump claimed that he could mediate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine on behalf of the United States, Harris accused the former president of praising “dictators”, making a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

She also said that Putin will eat Trump for lunch and that the former US president is trying to divide and distract people from reality.

“He is trying to divide and distract people from reality. It’s no secret that he thinks dictators are great. He and Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, exchanged love letters. These dictators and autocrats want you to be president again because they are so gullible that they can manipulate you with flattery and favors. That’s why so many military leaders told me you’re a disgrace,” Kamala Harris told Trump on stage.

“If Trump were Putin, he would be sitting inside Ukraine,” Harris said, “understanding why European allies and our core allies are so grateful that you’re no longer president, and understanding the importance of the largest military alliance the world has ever seen, which is NATO, and what we’ve done to preserve (Ukrainian President) Volodymyr Zelensky and the ability of Ukrainians to fight for their freedom,” Harris said.
Putin would otherwise be seated in Kiev, his sights fixed on the remainder of Europe. “You would have quickly lost interest in doing favors and in your friendship with a despot who will eat you for lunch,” the woman remarked.

Protest outside Sonia Gandhi’s house over Rahul Gandhi’s Sikh remarks

Protest outside Sonia Gandhi’s house over Rahul Gandhi’s Sikh remarks

BJP-backed Sikh groups are taking out a protest march to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s residence in Delhi, objecting to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the US on religious freedom enjoyed by the community in the country. Arguing that they are safer under the BJP government than during Congress rule, they are demanding that Mr Gandhi apologise for his remarks.

During his three-day visit to the US, Mr Gandhi had said the fight in India was not about politics.

Asking a Sikh member of the audience for his name, Mr Gandhi had said: “The fight is about whether he, as a Sikh, will be allowed to wear a turban in India; or whether he, as a Sikh, will be allowed to wear a kara in India; or whether he, as a Sikh, will be allowed to go to a gurdwara. That is the fight, and not just for him, but for all religions”.

The remarks have sparked an outcry in the country with the BJP accusing him of habitually making anti-national remarks abroad, which is particularly serious given his current position as the leader of the opposition. Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri has called Mr Gandhi’s comments “appalling” and accused him of spreading a “dangerous narrative” abroad.

“If ever a period in our history has evoked feelings of anxiety, insecurity, and existential threat within our community, it has been during the tenure of Rahul Gandhi’s family in positions of power.” the minister said, referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Though Mr Gandhi’s comments are in line with the Congress’ secular credentials and its stance on religious freedom, its timing is odd in light of the anti-India narrative spread by a section of the diaspora Sikhs.

No alliance with Congress? Haryana AAP chief says party will contest all seats

An AAP-Congress alliance for next month’s election in Haryana on Monday afternoon looked unlikely, as AAP state unit chief Sushil Gupta said his party would contest all 90 seats alone.

This came minutes after the AAP released its first list of 20 candidates, including 11 names for seats on which the Congress has announced candidates. Mr Gupta said a second list would be released “soon”.

“The AAP has taken its decision… We have gone ahead and announced candidates for 20 seats (and) more lists are coming. We are confident of our results in all 90 seats…”

“We awaited the alliance because the Congress has a strong organizational structure that supports us running for office in every assembly. After demonstrating our patience, we made our list available.” “At the national level, we were partners in the Bharat Gathbandhan,” Mr. Gupta stated to reporters.

Until last week, the AAP was in a “wait and watch” mode as talks with the Congress hit a roadblock.

The two parties had reached an “in-principle” agreement to rekindle the alliance, which prevented the BJP from winning all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana for the second consecutive election.

But working out a seat-share agreement proved difficult; The AAP wanted 10 seats, but the Congress was willing to give only seven, as its ally had failed to win the seat allotted to it in the general election – Kurukshetra, which the BJP won. The Congress contested the other nine seats and won five.

For this election, sources said the Aam Aadmi Party wanted seats in Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s home turf, which he was hoping to allocate to his loyalists.

Mr Hooda told NDTV last month that he had not spoken to AAP’s state leaders since the general election, and said the alliance was not limited to the state, where”There is a conflict between the Congress and the BJP.”

‘A black spot on democracy… goes abroad…’: How BJP leaders reacted to Rahul Gandhi’s US speech

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological parent RSS during a public address in Dallas, US, have drawn sharp reactions from the BJP. The critical stance taken by the opposition leader on various issues in his address at the University of Texas and speech to the NRIs has drawn sharp reactions from BJP leaders.

Congressman Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on unemployment have drawn harsh criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gaurav Bhatia, who referred to them as a “black spot on democracy.” Bhatia’s remarks came in response to Gandhi’s recent statements targeting the government’s attitude in terms of job creation.

Elon Musk-led SpaceX aims to send first unmanned Starship mission to Mars within 2 years

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said the first unmanned Starship mission to the Red Planet will be launched in two years, when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens.Humans will first travel to the Moon and subsequently Mars using Starship, the most potent rocket in existence.

In a post on SpaceX social media platform, the tech billionaire said that “the first Starship to Mars will be launched in 2 years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens”. “These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of intact landings on Mars. If these landings go well, the first crewed flights to Mars will take place in 4 years,” Musk announced.

According to him, the flight rate will increase exponentially from there, with the aim of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years. “Being multi-planetary would greatly extend the potential lifespan of consciousness, because now all of our eggs, literally and metabolically, would not be on the same planet,” the X boss said. His aerospace company SpaceX has created the first fully reusable rocket stage and, more importantly, made reuse economically viable. “Making life multi-planetary is basically a cost-per-ton problem on Mars. Currently the cost per ton of useful payload on the surface of Mars is about a billion dollars,” Musk explained. He added that to build a self-sustaining city there, it needs to improve to $100,000/ton, “so the technology needs to be 10,000 times better. Extremely difficult, but not impossible.”

Russia claims to make gains in eastern Ukraine and take control of town

Russia said on Sunday that its forces had taken full control of a town in eastern Ukraine, while Moscow’s forces were advancing on the strategically important town of Pokrovsk and trying to penetrate the Ukrainian defensive front.

In an attempt to seize the entirety of Donbass, which is roughly half the size of the US state of Ohio, the Russian army is making advances in eastern Ukraine.Since entering the country in February 2022, the Russian army has taken control of about a fifth of Ukraine.

The town of Novohrodivka, which is 12 km (7 miles) from Pokrovsk, a vital rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area, has been taken over by Russian forces, according to the ministry of defense of Russia. Before the war, there were 14,000 people living in the town.

Yuri Podolyaka, an influential, pro-Russian military blogger of Ukrainian origin, published maps showing Russian forces attacking at least two positions beyond Novohrodivka, less than 7 km (4 miles) from Pokrovsk.

The Ukrainian army’s general staff detailed fighting in the Pokrovsk sector, including Novohrodivka, in a report released Sunday evening.

It said 29 Russian advance attempts had been repelled, while seven clashes continued. “Our troops are taking measures to maintain the set positions,” it added.

However, a U.S.-funded Radio Liberty interview with a Ukrainian official last week claimed that Ukrainian forces had left Novohrodivka because the area was unsuitable for the city’s defense.

Explained: Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate rules

Explained: Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate rules

US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will face off in the first debate on Tuesday, with both trying to gain an edge in the fiercely contested race for the White House. After weeks of back-and-forth over where, when and how the debate will take place, US broadcaster ABC — which is hosting the event — this week announced the final rules for the contest, which have been agreed upon by both campaigns.

Here are the key highlights.

When and where to watch the Trump vs Harris debate
The debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday at 9:00 pm local time (0100 GMT on Wednesday) and will be broadcast live. There will be no audience in the room.

The event will be moderated by ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis and will run for 90 minutes, with two ad breaks.

Mikes muted at Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris debate?

The issue of whether microphones would be muted – as was done during the previous debate between US President Joe Biden and Trump – was controversial, with each side accusing the other of cowardice over the question.

ABC has announced that each candidate’s microphone will only be on when it’s their turn to speak, and muted when it’s the other candidate’s turn.

Only the moderator will be able to ask questions, and no topics or questions will be shared with the candidates beforehand.

Who will speak when?

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will not make opening statements. They will be allotted two minutes to answer each question, while their opponent will be given two minutes for a rebuttal.

There will be an additional minute for “follow-up, clarification or response,” according to the rules.

At the end of the debate, each candidate will make a two-minute closing statement, with Trump speaking last according to the results of a virtual coin toss.

No Props
Candidates will stand behind the podium throughout the debate; no props or pre-written notes will be allowed.
