‘Relations with China are not going very well, to be honest’: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday (July 29) said that India-China relations are “not going very well” at the moment, but India is “not looking at other countries to resolve what is actually an issue between us and China”.

Jaishankar, who is in Tokyo to attend a meeting between foreign ministers of the Quad group, was asked during a press conference about his view on China and what his expectations are from the Quad in resolving the strained ties between the two countries.

Responding to the first question, Jaishankar said, “Right now, I must say honestly that our relations with China are not going very well.”

“The main reason for this was that China had brought in very large forces to the border areas between India and China in 2020 during COVID,” he continued, citing disagreements and fatalities on both sides as a result.

According to Jaishankar, the effects of the skirmishes are still being felt because the border dispute has not been settled. “So, in the present, your relations with China are not normal and are not good,” I would respond to a question about them.
