After achieving tremendous success in the Lok Sabha elections, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has now decided to turn to central politics. With this move, the party is deliberating on who will replace him as the leader of the opposition. According to political analysts, his uncle Shivpal Yadav is the frontrunner for the post. It is believed that after the success of the PDA (Backward, Dalit and Minority) strategy in the Lok Sabha elections, the SP president may further strengthen the PDA strategy keeping in mind the 2027 assembly elections.
Akhilesh Yadav, who won the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, also holds the Karhal assembly seat. The move has put an end to speculations on whether he will retain his position as the leader of the opposition in the state assembly or lead the party MPs in Parliament. He was elected MP from Kannauj in the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Akhilesh Yadav said in a press conference on Tuesday, “I have met the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri and told them that since I have won the election from 2 seats, I have to leave one seat. So I will soon inform you about leaving the assembly seat.” In Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, Akhilesh secured his family stronghold by securing 6,42,292 votes and defeated theBJP MP in office, Subrat Pathak, received more than one lakh votes. Samajwadi Party MLA Awadhesh Prasad has also resigned from the assembly after being elected MP from Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency. In the Lok Sabha elections held in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party (SP) won 37 seats, while BJP secured 33 seats. Congress party won 6 seats and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) secured 2 seats. Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) and Apna Dal (Soni Lal) managed to win 1 seat each.
