NEET grace marks of 1,563 students cancelled, re-exam to be held on June 23:

Centre NEET 2024 result dispute:  If candidates who got grace marks opt out of the re-exam, their earlier marks will be included in the result.

The Centre today told the Supreme Court that the scorecards of 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates seeking admission to medical colleges will be cancelled as they were given grace marks for a wrong question. The students can appear for the re-exam on June 23 and the results will be declared on June 30.

The government’s decision comes after allegations of large-scale irregularities and unfair marking in medical entrance exams across the country.

“On June 10, 11, and 12, the committee convened to review the accusations. The impacted candidates’ scorecards will be canceled in accordance with the committee’s recommendations, and these students will take a new exam,” the Center informed the Supreme Court today.

If these candidates do not appear for the re-exam, their earlier marks will be considered as the result without grace mark

Grace marks, according to the petitioners from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, have “no defined logic.” “Statistically impossible” marks were mentioned in the petitions; these included students who scored 720 out of a possible 720.

The petitions pointed out that 67 students from a coaching centre scored full marks. They also cited a provisional answer key released by the NTA, which was opposed by over 13,000 students because the issue pointed to a different answer.

Outlining the dangers of cheating in medical tests, the petitions said, “This field requires a deep understanding of scientific and medical knowledge… Cheating or using unfair means to pass the examination may lead to lack of competence and endanger the lives of patients.
