Narendra Modi meets President Murmu, stakes claim to form government
Meeting with President Draupadi Murmu on Friday, Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi asserted his claim to lead the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to the center. 73-year-old Modi will take oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time on Sunday, June 9, equalling India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In his address after meeting the President, Modi said,
“This election marks the first since Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav… People have offered the NDA government a chance to serve the country for the third time. I promise the nation’s citizens that the rate at which the nation has developed over the past two years, changes are evident in every industry, and the fact that 25 crore people are now out of poverty is a source of pride for all Indians.
” Narendra Modi government formation live updatesEarlier in the day, Modi was formally elected as the leader of the NDA, receiving the support of Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu, Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy. But all such efforts were futile… Such things ‘die very young’, and it happened,” Modi said at the NDA parliamentary party meeting.
“Narendra Modi is the right leader for India right now, coming at the right moment. This is a great opportunity for India. If you miss it now, you will miss it forever. So today we have a great opportunity,” Naidu said, endorsing Modi as the leader of the alliance. “We have full faith that Modi will develop India and we will fully support him with each passing day,”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared. Bihar’s outstanding tasks will all be finished.
It is a very good thing that we have all come together and we will all work together with you. … We will all work under your leadership.” Attacking the opposition, the JD(U) chief said, “I have seen some people win here and there (Lok Sabha elections) by talking nonsense. They have not done any work, never served the country. Next time when you win, they will all lose.”
