Mukesh Ambani takes zero salary, never sells shares, then how does he spend

Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s richest industrialist, ranked 11th in the global list of billionaires. Reliance Industries’ annual report revealed that Mukesh Ambani has not taken any salary since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. His salary has been zero since FY 2020-21. Despite not taking a salary, Ambani also does not sell his shares. So how does he spend?

Mukesh Ambani’s main source of income is dividends. Dividends are a part of a company’s profits that are distributed among its shareholders. For example, if Reliance Industries makes a profit of Rs 1,000 crore, it can reinvest Rs 500 crore in the company and distribute the remaining Rs 500 crore among its shareholders. As a significant shareholder, Ambani gets a large share of these dividends.

Ambani and his family own 50.39% stake in Reliance Industries. Notably, Mukesh Ambani owns 0.12% of the shares, which is equivalent to 80 lakh shares. His family, including his mother Kokilaben Ambani, wife Nita Ambani and children Akash, Isha and Anant Ambani, also own significant shares. Reliance typically distributes dividends ranging from ₹6.30 to ₹10 per share annually. Therefore, even a conservative estimate suggests that Ambani’s earnings from dividends alone are substantial.
