MS Dhoni makes rare appearance on Instagram to congratulate India on winning T20 World Cup, shares a long and raw message

It was a long wait for Team India and its fans. The last time India won an ICC title was in 2013, when Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side won the Champions Trophy by defeating England on their home ground in a rain-delayed match. At that time, no one could have imagined that India would wait 11 years for their next major trophy. The talent was never questioned; India kept reaching the knock-out rounds consistently, but often fell short due to crucial lapses in the game or getting outplayed at crucial junctures.

On Saturday, June 29, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team finally ensured that the performances were stellar and luck was with them, as they ended their winning streak by lifting the T20 World Cup championship with an exciting victory over South Africa. It was not for the faint-hearted; at one point, it seemed that the Proteas were almost certain to win. They needed 26 runs from 30 balls. Then, the Jasprit Bumrah show began.

This was India’s second T20 World Cup title; the team won its first title 17 years ago under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. And so, it was almost poetic when nearly two hours after the win, the inaugural tournament-winning skipper expressed his raw emotions for the world to read and cherish. Dhoni, who is not very active on social media platforms, posted on his official Instagram account to pay tribute to Rohit’s victorious team.

Even though he is ‘Captain Cool’ on the field, Dhoni admitted that as a fan, even he could not suppress his emotions when the South African batsmen attacked the Indian bowlers. “My heart rate was up; congratulations for staying calm, keeping the confidence and doing what you did,” Dhoni wrote for Team India.
