MakeMyTrip sees 3400% increase in searches in Lakshadweep amid India-Maldives dispute
Travel company MakeMyTrip (MMT) on Monday informed that it has seen a 3400% increase in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Union Territory. This development has come to light at a time when a diplomatic row has arisen between India and Maldives over derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldives Youth Empowerment Deputy Minister Mariyam Shiuna. The Maldives minister’s comments caused an uproar on the internet and Indians called for a boycott of the island nation for tourism.
The number of searches for Lakshadweep on the platform has increased by 3400% following the Honorable Prime Minister’s visit. We’ve launched a ‘Beaches of India’ campaign on the platform with incentives and discounts to encourage Indian tourists to visit the breathtaking beaches in the nation in response to this interest in Indian beaches. Keep an eye on this space! MakeMyTrip stated in an X post.
The increase in searches related to Lakshadweep came after several influential Indian celebrities joined the #Explore Indianislands trend on the internet and requested people to prefer them for tourism purposes instead of Maldives, which is clearly visible after the coming of the new government. It is becoming anti-India.
