Lok Sabha session to begin from June 24 with oath-taking and election of Speaker

The election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker will be held on June 26 and soon after that the Prime Minister will introduce his Council of Ministers to the House
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will begin from June 24 with the swearing-in by the newly elected members, followed by the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26 and President Draupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of the two Houses on June 27.
The controversy over the appointment of BJP leader and seven-time member Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro tem speaker is likely to overshadow the session. The move has been criticised by the Opposition, which has alleged that the government ignored the claim of Congress member K Suresh to the post.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Mr Mahtab has been a Lok Sabha member for seven consecutive terms, making him eligible for the post, while Mr Suresh lost the electionsHis current term in the lower house is his fourth consecutive term after serving in 1998 and 2004. He had been elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989, 1991, 1996, and 1999. At Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, President Draupadi Murmu will appoint Mr. Mahtab as Protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Mr. Mahtab will then arrive at Parliament House, where the Lok Sabha will convene at 11:00 a.m. The proceedings will begin with the members observing silence on the occasion of the first meeting of the 18th Lok Sabha. After this, Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh will table the list of members elected to the lower house in the House.
