Government gave this ‘big’ clarification on Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea’s mobile tariff hike

The false allegations that the government permitted Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to unilaterally announce tariff increases without any oversight have been denied.

. All the three telecom companies have recently increased the price of their prepaid and postpaid plans which became effective from July 3, 2024.

In an official press release, the regulatory body said that with three private sector companies and one public sector company, the current mobile service market operates through market forces of demand and supply. The release said that the rates for telecom services are decided by market forces within the regulatory framework notified by the independent regulator i.e. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI.

It added, “The government does not interfere in free market decisions as functionality is under the jurisdiction of TRAI and tariffs are subject to tolerance.” “The TSPs notify TRAI of any changes to mobile service tariffs, and TRAI ensures that these modifications stay within the established regulatory framework.” Average mobile speed increases as 5G is deployed.
