China’s nuclear expansion is the main focus of a classified nuclear strategic plan approved by Biden.
US President Joe Biden has approved a highly classified nuclear strategic plan that shifts Washington’s deterrence strategy to focus on China’s growing nuclear arsenal, Reuters reports, citing the New York Times.
According to the New York Times, the revised plan, called “Nuclear Employment Guidance,” marks a significant shift in US nuclear policy.
“Nuclear Employment Guidance is updated every four years, but this revision is notable for its focus on China’s growing nuclear capabilities,” a senior administration official said, according to a Reuters report.
The White House has not publicly announced Biden’s approval of the plan, but an unclassified notification is expected to be sent to Congress before he leaves office, the paper reported.
When asked about the report, a White House spokesperson declined to comment, saying, “We do not discuss classified information.”
