After meeting Hathras stampede victims, Rahul Gandhi said, Yogi Adityanath should give ‘maximum compensation’

Rahul Gandhi went to meet the families of those killed in the stampede at Bhole Baba’s Satsang in Hathras Rae Bareli MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to give ‘maximum compensation’ to the victims of the Hathras tragedy without any delay.

He said that the compensation should be given as soon as possible as most of them are poor. “”These are destitute people who require immediate payment,” he said. Giving it to someone six months, a year, or even longer won’t help them. Payment ought to be made as quickly as possible.” Gandhi visited Bhole Baba’s Satsang in Hathras to meet the families of those slain in the stampede. He also said that although he does not want to openly politicise the matter, there has been lapse on the part of the administration in this incident, in which 121 people lost their lives. “I don’t want to speak from a political angle, but there has been some lapse on the part of the administration. Some mistakes have been made, which should be identified,” Gandhi told reporters after meeting the families of the victims. He said he had a “personal” conversation with the family members of the stampede victims. They said there has been lapse on the part of the administration. They said the policing that should have been done was not done. But they are sad and in shock. I am trying to understand their situation,” Gandhi said.

Hari Mohan, one of the many victims who met the Congress leader today, said Rahul Gandhi has assured him that he will try to increase the compensation amount.

Before coming to Hathras, Rahul Gandhi stopped in Aligarh to meet the victims. He reached Pilkhana village in Aligarh at 7.15 am and reached Green Park in Vibhav Nagar Colony in Hathras at 9 am.

One resident of Aligarh said, “He spoke to us and tried to understand our issues.” In order to prevent similar occurrences in the future, he declared he would bring up the matter in Parliament.”

A three-person judicial panel led by a retired high court judge was established by the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday to look into the Hathras tragedy. The panel is also tasked with investigating the possibility that the stampede was the result of a “conspiracy.”
