‘I don’t plan it…’: Rahul Gandhi says he has been facing marriage pressure for 20-30 years

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi discussed women’s safety, marriage, education and other issues with young Kashmiri women. In one such video shared by Gandhi on social media, he can be seen discussing marriage – and the pressures and expectations attached to it – with these women.

In a fun interaction, he asks the women about the “pressure of marriage”. One of the women said she is not planning to get married soon and in turn asks him about his opinion about marriage pressure. Gandhi laughed off the question and said, “I have been facing that pressure for 20-30 years.”

The woman asked him if he was planning to get married. “Yes, I am not planning it…but if it happens…” he said, until one of the women said “invite us on that day”.

They also discuss the pressure they face from society and family to get married early. One of them said that as soon as a woman completes class 12 or graduates, there is a lot of pressure on her to get married.

Another said that the divorce rate is gradually increasing and if marriages should end like this then maybe there is no need to get married.

The video has been liked over 332k times and shared 11.8k times till the time this story was published. Most of the comments also praised Gandhi for such an informative conversation.

In another video of the conversation, the women and Gandhi can be seen discussing harassment and discrimination. One of the women said that not all harassment women face at their workplaces is reported. Another asked how Gandhi and the party hope to rectify this. She can be seen saying that she has discussed the issue with her mother – Sonia Gandhi – and added that social change is of utmost importance, and the attitude of men towards women needs to change.
