Hindenburg “making a mockery of India”: Harish Salve on short-seller’s latest claim

Eminent legal expert and senior advocate Harish Salve has issued a warning about organisations like US short-seller Hindenburg Research, saying if they are not reined in, they will one day question the country’s judiciary. He said Hindenburg is maligned even in the US, but here, “we are giving it credibility… Why should Hindenburg be considered an oracle or gospel?”

While Hindenburg’s allegations against the Adani Group last year kicked up a storm, its latest attack targeting Sebi (Securities Exchange Board of India) chief Madhabi Puri Buch and the Adani Group has united industry, the ruling BJP, investors and experts.

“In any other country, people would have said the Hindenburg report is in the dustbin… Hindenburg is trying to bully Sebi… India should have a tribunal for defamation… Tomorrow, such bodies will not spare even judges,” Mr Salve, the former solicitor general, said in an exclusive interview to NDTV.

He also said it was “shameful” that a section of political leaders were taking Hindenburg seriously.
“Why do individuals who make ludicrous claims manage to get away with it? In India, people’s dignity is not valued. “It’s time we began treating Indian dignity with respect,” he declared, accusing Hindenburg of “making a joke out of India.” Denouncing the accusations as a “malicious, mischievous and manipulative selection of publicly available information” that leads to “predetermined conclusions for personal profiteering in disregard of facts and law,” the Adani Group has responded to the claims with criticism.
