Chief Justice of India Chandrachud said that the Hathras stampede case has been ordered to be listed for judicial hearing

A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on July 3 to appoint a five-member expert committee under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge to probe the Hathras stampede, which has led to over 121 deaths.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud informed the Supreme Court during oral mention on July 9 that the Hathras stampede deaths case has been listed for judicial hearing.

A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on July 3 to appoint a five-member expert committee under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge to probe the Hathras stampede, which has led to over 121 deaths.

The petition, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also requested the court to lay down safety guidelines for mass meetings and public gatherings.

The incident took place during a prayer meeting organised by a self-styled godman Narayan Sakkar Hari in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh. A huge crowd had gathered for the event.

“This horrific stampede raises several questions regarding the dereliction of duty and omission of the State Government and the Municipal Corporations. Apart from failure to maintain surveillance and administration, the authorities have also failed to control the crowd gathered for the event,” the petition said.
